Privacy Policy
Last updated September 18, 2026
Yuyap is a speaking-first language-learning service, on the web and in our iPhone and Android apps, operated by IDK Studios, Inc. (“Yuyap,” “we,” “us”). This policy explains what we collect, why, who processes it for us, how long we keep it, and the choices you have.
Your voice is never stored by Yuyap
Yuyap is about speaking, so your microphone matters most. Your voice goes to one of these places, only while you are speaking, and we never keep the recording:
- Speaking practice. When you speak a line or a word, the recording is sent to our speech-scoring provider (Microsoft Azure Speech), scored for pronunciation, and discarded. We keep the score, a number, and how long your mic was on.
- Talk, the AI conversation partner. While you talk, your voice streams live to Google's Gemini, which transcribes it and generates your partner's spoken replies. We keep the text of the conversation (see below), never the audio.
- The speaking game. On the web, your voice goes to Microsoft Azure Speech or to your browser's built-in speech recognition to recognise the words you say. In our apps, it uses your phone's built-in speech recognition, which Apple (on iPhone) or Google (on Android) may process on their servers.
There is no audio field in our database, by design.
What we collect
- Account. If you save your progress: your email address. If you continue with Google, your name, email address and profile picture from your Google account; if you sign in with Apple, the email address Apple shares with us (which may be a private relay address). You can also use Yuyap as a guest, with no account details at all.
- Onboarding answers. Your reason for learning, your daily goal, and the date you want to be having real conversations by, used to shape your trip and your plan. We also ask where you are with the language, how many apps you have tried, how many real conversations you've had, and how you found us — the first three shape what we say back to you, and the last one tells us where to spend our time. The conversations answer stays on your device: it is used to draw your own two numbers back to you and is never sent to us.
- Learning activity. Which scenes and reviews you've done, pronunciation scores, speaking durations, and any line feedback you send, the data that powers your deck and progress.
- Talk conversations. If you use Talk, we keep the text transcript of each conversation (what you said and what your partner said, with translations), its topic and its length, so you can look back at it and so we can meter the plan. After a conversation, an AI model picks out up to three short, everyday facts you mentioned (a hobby, your work, a plan) so your partner can remember them next time; we keep at most twelve, and the instructions exclude anything about health, politics, religion, sexuality, finances or precise location. These facts are not shown in the app today. Please don't share sensitive personal information in a conversation.
- Purchases. On the web, billing is handled by Stripe. In the iPhone app it is handled by Apple, and in the Android app by Google Play, and we use RevenueCat to receive those purchases. From them we receive your subscription status, the plan, the store, dates and transaction references, linked to your Yuyap account ID. We never see or store your card number.
- Usage and diagnostics. Through PostHog, product analytics: the pages and screens you visit, what you tap and which features you use, error and crash reports, your device, browser and operating system type, app version, and a random identifier for your browser or device, linked to your account ID once you have one. On the web, PostHog can estimate an approximate location (such as your country or city) from your IP address; the app and the events our servers send have that lookup switched off. We never collect your precise location. See “Your analytics choice” below.
- Messages to us. What you send through the contact form or by email: your email address, the topic and your message.
- Essential technical data. A secure session cookie to keep you signed in. We do not use advertising cookies or advertising identifiers, and we do not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
How we use it
To run the service, score your speaking, hold Talk conversations, build your deck, track progress, process your subscription, answer your messages, understand and fix what breaks, and send account emails (such as your sign-in code or link). We do not sell your personal data, and we don't use it for advertising.
Who processes your data
We rely on a small set of providers, only as needed to run Yuyap. Each receives only what its job needs.
Any third party with whom we share user data is contractually required to provide the same or equal protection of that data as stated in this policy and as required by Apple's App Store Review Guidelines (5.1.1 and 5.1.2). Providers may use different technical and organisational measures, but those differences do not reduce the required level of protection.
- Supabase, database, accounts and storage: your account, learning activity and Talk conversations.
- Vercel, hosting and delivery of the website and our servers.
- Microsoft Azure Speech, pronunciation scoring and speech recognition: what you say in speaking practice and the web speaking game, processed in the moment.
- Google Gemini, Talk's live conversation: your voice while you talk, and the conversation setup, which can include the remembered facts described above.
- Anthropic (Claude), Talk's text help: the lines you ask to translate or break down, the phrases you ask how to say, and the conversation transcript when the short facts are picked out.
- ElevenLabs, text-to-speech that plays your partner's lines back when you replay them (it receives that text only). We can also run Talk's live conversation on ElevenLabs instead of Google; when we do, your voice in Talk goes to ElevenLabs in the same way.
- PostHog, product analytics and error reporting.
- Stripe, payments on the web.
- Apple, App Store purchases, Sign in with Apple, and speech recognition in the iPhone speaking game.
- Google, Google Play purchases, Google sign-in, and speech recognition in the Android speaking game.
- RevenueCat, in-app purchase records, linked to your Yuyap account ID.
- Resend, account emails.
- Formspree, the contact form.
- Expo, delivering updates to our phone apps.
Your voice and AI choice
In the app, we ask before your voice is ever sent anywhere: once before your first scored take, and once before your first conversation in Talk. Each asks separately, and each names who receives what. Until you agree, no audio leaves your device.
You can change either answer at any time in the app under Settings → Voice and AI. Turning one off takes effect on your next take — nothing further is sent. Turning it back on shows you the same details again before anything is shared. Declining does not lock you out: the scene still plays, just without a pronunciation score.
Your analytics choice
In the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom we ask before any analytics run. Elsewhere analytics are on by default, and the notice we show lets you turn them off in one tap. To change your answer later on the web, clear this site's data in your browser and choose Decline on the notice that appears again; in the app, reinstall it and choose Decline. You can also email us to have the analytics data linked to your account deleted.
Retention, deletion & your rights
We keep your data while your account is active, and guest data while the guest session exists. You can delete your account at any time: in the app (Settings, then Delete account), on the web (sign in, then Settings, then Delete account), or by emailing us. Deletion permanently removes your account and everything linked to it, including your progress, scores and Talk conversations. How to delete your account, and what is kept.
A few things outlast the account: a short record that it was deleted (its internal ID, the date, and whether it had a subscription, with which store, and whether we cancelled it), which holds no email, name or learning data and has no set end date; records of a guest session being merged into it; and your address on our unsubscribe list if you unsubscribed from marketing email. Analytics events held by PostHog and purchase records held by RevenueCat are not removed automatically; email us and we will ask for them to be deleted. Stripe, Apple and Google keep their own payment records under their own policies and legal obligations. Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store or Google Play subscription; cancel it in the store.
You can also ask us to access, correct, export, or delete your data at any time. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or CCPA; we honor those requests.
Security & location
Data travels encrypted between your device and our servers. Access to your data is protected by per-user database rules, and payment card data never touches our servers. Our infrastructure is hosted in the United States; if you use Yuyap from elsewhere, your data is processed there.
How old you need to be
You need to be at least 13 to use Yuyap. In the United Kingdom and the European Economic Area the minimum is 16, unless the country you are in has set a lower age for digital consent, in which case that age applies. We do not ask your age and we do not verify it; we also do not knowingly collect data from anyone below the age that applies to them. If you believe a child has given us data, email support@yuyap.com and we will delete it.
This matters most for the microphone. A voice recording is personal information, and Yuyap keeps none: speaking practice is scored in the moment and discarded, Talk audio is used only to produce the conversation and only its text is kept, and there is no audio field in our database.
Changes & contact
If we make material changes, we'll update this page and the date above. Questions about your data, or a request to access or delete it: email support@yuyap.com.
